Details
The National Picasso Museum in Paris is once again displaying its collection across three floors, starting from March 12th. This follows a year of celebration and a masterful exhibition dedicated to the artist Sophie Calle. Ten years after the museum's reopening, the collection has found its permanent home in the magnificent setting of the Hôtel Salé.
The product of an extraordinary history, the formation of the National Picasso Museum Paris’s collection was made possible by a system of donations - today it is the largest public collection of Picasso's works, the "Picasso's Picassos." Originating from the artist's workshops, this collection allows us to better understand the aesthetic explorations of Picasso, who was at turns disconcerting, multifaceted, contradictory, reflective, gestural and conceptual, an aesthete, a cubist, a classicist, a surrealist or simply a figurative and political artist.
A vibrant and open space, the museum tackles societal issues by examining Picasso's work and its reception - that of the most renowned, most observed, and yet also the most debated painter.
This is also an opportunity to focus on dossier exhibitions or counterpoints within the collections. The first in this series pays tribute to the recently deceased artist François Gilot. Beyond her famous book titled Living with Picasso, published in 1955, the exhibition traces the journey from her group's "New Realities" to the large totemic compositions of the "emblematic paintings" of the 1980s.
