As part of the special guest curation by Naomi Beckwith, Palais de Tokyo presents a major retrospective of American sculptor Melvin Edwards, a pivotal figure in contemporary art. Spanning sixty years of artistic practice, the exhibition reveals his unique visual language: welded metal, repurposed industrial tools, chains, and barbed wire, all exploring the history of post-slavery violence and Black resistance. Edwards’s abstract sculptures act as portals between the past and present of the Black Atlantic, infused with poetry, jazz, and collaborations with Francophone writers (Damas, Glissant).
