Mickalene Thomas, the first African-American artist to be honored with a major retrospective at the Grand Palais, presents “All About Love.” Over two decades of paintings, collages, photographs, and installations—often adorned with rhinestones—Thomas reinvents the classical portrait with a Black queer and feminist perspective. Inspired by bell hooks, the exhibition celebrates love as a force of liberation and joy, placing Black women—friends, lovers, muses—at the heart of a vibrant visual narrative that boldly dialogues with Manet and Ingres.
