A Journey Through Ancient Han Art

Jointly organized by the Chinese Cultural Center in Paris and the Sichuan Museum, it presents a selection of authentic works divided into themes such as agricultural production, urban life, and funerary beliefs, offering an immersion into the vitality of the Ba-Shu region two thousand years ago.
This visual exploration, blending realism with romantic imagination, celebrates the cultural and economic fusion that made Sichuan a key crossroads of the ancient Silk Road.

Artistic Context
Under the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.–A.D. 220), Sichuan, fed by the Dujiangyan irrigation system, became a prosperous fertile land through agriculture, salt and textile industries, and trade via the Silk Road, fostering a funerary art in brick and stone that captures daily life and beliefs in immortality.
The rubbings on display, from rock-cut tombs, illustrate vivid scenes of fieldwork, dancing banquets, and majestic processions, blending simple realism with a romantic vision of the "celestial paradise," featuring motifs such as the Queen Mother of the West symbolizing the fusion of life and death.
This Sino-French collaboration, inspired by recent archaeological discoveries in Sichuan, connects antiquity to contemporary themes of sustainability and cultural exchange, enriching the Sichuan Museum's collections through international dissemination that perpetuates the legacy of Ba-Shu as an eternal land of abundance.
